I think everyone would agree that we all have bad habits. Whether it is small, such as bouncing your leg up-and-down while talking to someone. Or something more apparent, such as smoking.
So what are some simple steps we can take to start the process of breaking those bad habits?
1. Acknowledge that it is detrimental. You can not fix something if you do not know said something exists. Even when/if you do, you will not fix it unless you know it’s causing you a problem. So therefore we need to inspect our habits and then figure out whether they are serving us in a positive manner or if they are a detriment to us.
2. Find out what created the habit. As well as what is encouraging it to continue. Then cut out whatever is encouraging it and find ways to manage the stress causing the habit better. Make those managing systems healthy and sustainable so that you dont slip back into the bad habit.
3. Keep at it for one month. Habits can be made and broken within the course of one month. It took a month of continuing the bad habit for it to stick. So now you need to focus on maintaining the better habits for one month also. Even when one month comes and goes make sure to keep it up and soon you’ll find it’s become a second nature of sorts.
